What Is the Auto-Renew Model and How Does It Affect My Account?

Overview

By default, all .CO accounts are set to the Auto-Renew model. This means that when a domain expires, the Registry automatically renews it for 1 year and deducts the renewal fee from your balance.

Auto-Renew Grace Period

After auto-renewal, a 45-day Auto-Renew Grace Period begins. During this window, the Registrar can delete the domain and receive a full credit for the renewal fee. This gives you 45 days to notify the Registry if a customer has decided not to renew.

Balance Impact of Auto-Renewal

Auto-renewals deduct your balance only when the 45-day grace period ends. If you delete the domain within 45 days, your balance is not affected. An auto-renew that has not yet completed its grace period does NOT affect your available balance.

Auto-Delete Model (Alternative)

If you prefer not to auto-renew, switch your account to the Auto-Delete model. Under this model, domains that are not explicitly renewed before expiry are placed on Pending Deletion when they expire. They can be restored during the 30-day Redemption Grace Period but will otherwise be permanently deleted.
